I think the black guy dying first in horror movies trope has more to do with Hollywood racism than trying to scare people. Because only the star(s) can live til the end and they have to be the white guy/gal/couple. I think that's part of why I have an affinity for the ones where everybody dies (or maybe I'm just morbid that way).

Yeah - the racism thing is a hard topic. I didn't want to address it in the post but I didn't want to just ignore it either ( ... )

Thank you for sharing that story, I hadn't ever heard any of the basic Wendigo stories other than what was in show. I may have to hunt this book down, I don't do very well with scary stories, but I love folklore and urban myths.

And that art work is creepily wonderful.

Night Of The Living Dead gets a separate comment because it's just awesome that way. fuzzybluemonkey September 29 2009, 22:26:24 UTC
Oh man, Night of the Living Dead nigh on broke me. It's getting towards the end and, "Hey, the black guy is the only one to survive 'til morning, that's awes-" BANG! And then the meat hook. It was quite possibly the first and (so far) only time I have ever been legitimately horrified by something that happened in a horror movie. I mean, I love horror movies, but they tend towards the predictable, you know? But he survives the zombies, he survives the night, he survives the stupidity of the people he's stuck with, he survives all that only to be killed by his fellow man- the people ostensibly coming to rescue him. Ouch.

Welcome and sorry for the late response! Yeah - it's line art vs painting but both have that "oh that's pretty... and very disturbing" reaction.
