Hippocampus atrophy in people reporting born-again experiences may or may not be valuable. Many people who experience it need major emotional change to become better human beings. Many succeed, but this study is a warning that it can also badly stunt the emotional development of the person undergoing the changes if left unchecked. It saddens and amuses me that my early impression that most born-agains fail in discipleship (not unlike their obsession with protecting the unborn), refusing to take responsibility for the long term care and development of Christians (or unwanted newborns) after the experience. In fact, most of them reject the lengthy conversion process of established faiths that create deep and mature faith and emotional well being.
