He did, indeed. He was able to debunk some of the myths that have grown up around the journey, as well as fill in information that had been mostly ignored.
It certainly sounds harrowing and not a 'nice' read. But I can see why it's a gripping and compelling story. It's sounds as if the author wove fact and fiction very well indeed to make such an interesting, albeit harrowing book.
Exactly. Not nice, but certainly and interesting and compelling book. But it's all fact, gathered from letters and statements that had been basically ignored before.
