That’s an interesting and unsettling premise. Not just because of criminals being given free rein to do as they please without consequences but because if everyone walks off the job - crops rotting, production lines halted, stores shuttered, basic services unavailable - how is anyone supposed to survive for six months. I couldn’t.
That's a big problem in the book, especially with basic services being unavailable. Yet I could see a lot of people doing that, just walking away from any responsibility. That's what makes the protagonist such a unique and special person.
Yes, it would make the protagonist stand out. And yet … would it make a difference? If most people have no food, water, electricity, gasoline, medications, etc, etc, etc …. does it matter that the mystery is solved and the perpetrator identified ? A very interesting (possibly unanswerable) question.
It's basically that it matters to him. He knows that it will make little difference in the long run. The end will come long before the perpetrator goes to prison. But not doing his job would be too much like giving up.
This one does sound like it would give the reader a lot to chew on. Would it matter? Even with the consideration that in 6 months everyone would be dead I do think it would matter.
It seems interesting but also kind of depressing. lol I am intrigued though.
