I agree with you about precocious children. It is incredibly hard to like them.

Yeah, it takes a deft hand to write children well. Not every writer is a Stephen King.

I've noticed some authors just cannot write children realistically at all. It definitely takes a special talent.

I think so. Unfortunately, it's not a talent that Wilson seems to have. Luckily, he's written plenty that I've very much enjoyed.
