SURVEY PLZ!

IF YOU ARE A MUSICIAN OR KNOW ANY MUSICIANS, PLEASE READ THIS!

Hey flist! I need a BIG BIG favour from you guys. I'm looking at whether there is a relationship between musicians and their hand-spans, particularly pianists who are assumed to have larger hand-spans, often through practise, or whteher it determines instrument choice. I just want to do a quick, rough survey to see test some theories out and see if I can make some initial judgments before I go ahead and come up with an actual thesis.

If you fit the following criteria, PLEASE DO THIS SURVEY! It will only take a few minutes, and I'm making this public so you may post anonymously if you wish.

1. If you play any instrument e.g. violin, piano, flute, trumpet, sax, mandolin, sitar, whatever. Anything that involves major fingerwork.
2. If you are NOT a vocalist or percussionist. (sorry!) Vocalists who have accompanied themselves with piano/guitar and consider themselves competent players are, however, welcome to take part..
3. If you have played for at least 8-10 years and consider yourself very competent.

Even if you do not fit all of the criteria, please help me out by posting this on your own journals so I can get a variety of results. I'm really hoping to get a good idea by getting at least 20-50 results.

If you've made it this far, thanks so much, I really appreciate your help and participation! I promise that your personal details will not be used in this research, only the answers to the questions will be used, and even then, this is only initial stuff and I'll let you know if I want to follow up on it. Thanks again!

Okay, on with the survey.

Please answer these questions as honestly as possible. If you cannot give an answer, leave it blank.

1. How many instruments do you play?

2. Which instrument do you consider your principal instrument? (e.g. I play 4 instruments & I sing, but I consider the violin my principal instrument, having played since I was 7 and focusing on it the most.) You may name two, if necessary, but not more.

3. How many years have you played the instrument(s) listed in question 2?

4. Name a piece you are currently working on.

5. Please splay your hand such that your thumb and pinky finger are as far apart as possible. Measure the length from the tip of the thumb to the pinky using a ruler and write down this measurement. You may answer in inches, but centimetres is preferred.

6. FOR PIANISTS ONLY: what is the largest interval you can reach?

7. Would you mind your results being used in the more comprehensive survey following this one? No personal details are required. If YES, please give an email you check often. You may be contacted in a month or so.

8. Are there any other comments you would like to add? (e.g. are you double-jointed, do you have hypermobility, or Marfan's syndrome? anything that would affect your hand-span in particular.

10. Would you prefer your comment to be screened?

Aaaand that's it! Thanks so much for taking part, I really really really REALLY appreciate it.
