Upon reflection, I have concluded that I have failed to communicate the notion expressed in my previous post adequately, so here's a second, more abstract approach ( Read more... )

I jibe you about not posting and you rant about just the very sort of shit that's weighing on me right now? Hot damn.

I believe I get what you're saying. I feel experience is underrated for being as rich and complex as it is. It's completely different to say "I have an idea" versus "I will to INVOLVE myself in this idea, not just in my thoughts but in practice." As a form of inquiry, the former has major limitations. As a way of life, it can be torture for someone with an open mind. It's hard to feel stuck (physically, socially, etc.) in a place where you can't explore your thoughts and passions in some tangible form, especially in a time of so much doubt and so much change. Suddenly you're at the reins of your future in a way you haven't been before, and you feel completely naive.

Sorry about the grant, by the way. My longtime roommate Shaun got a similar rejection from a cultural exchange program in Japan. Some people just don't recognize genius, you know?

Haha. I hear you on the feeling stuck bit and also on the naivety. Do you feel like you actually gained a fair bit of experience during college to prepare you for post-graduate shenanigans?

Yes and no. Nancy (that one professor I rave about) is literally the sole reason for the "yes." She knows this shit cold and has been doing it for 30 years. I have the utmost confidence in the guidance she's given me and my skills have improved since she arrived. On the other hand, I feel like I've had little opportunity to practice all the things she has taught me. Up to 3/4 of my time on a project is spent on all the software bullshit - stuff that isn't creative, isn't my field, and just gets in the way. In other words, I don't get to spend much time on the very task I want to be hired for! So, while I now know plenty about how animation is supposed to be done, I'm not totally confident I can execute it as well or as quickly as I need to.

You?
