A modern-day Unix-Hater, I am.

I officially hate Unix as of now.

The c should have been a t. For the un-knowing, the t switch lists all the files contained in the archive, whereas c creates a new archive. Even if you don't have any files to put in it, in which case you get a zero-length file.

Pressing enter means never having to say you're sorry.

Unix is not designed to protect users, it does what it's told. Typos suck, though. Backups rock.

Very true, on all points. But that specific behavour is completely brain-dead, from no matter which angle you look at it.

It still doesn't stop me from hating Unix. To be fair, I have yet to find a system I consider truly awesome (BeOS was close... but only close). Looks like I have to build my own :)

Most sincere sympathies. Such results are indescribably shitty.

That sucks - and illustrates why backups should be on burned off to a CD or placed on tape.

I gave away my tape drive long ago, and my CD burner is at the bottom of a big, heavy box right now. So I lose :(

Nothing unrecoverable, but still a huge pain in the ass.
