Smitten: My Botched Attempt at a Novel

May 25, 2011 17:25

During the summer of 2006 (holy shit, has it really been that long ago?), I decided to write a novel. Unfortunately, I was only experienced with short stories, and I underestimated how much planning and pre-writing goes into the process. A couple of months into the novel I realized that I was already approaching a dead end. The story had no focus ( Read more... )

I couldn't even believe it when I had gotten the alert! I haven't read or written a piece of fiction in months. I am very inspired by you. I work 8am - 8pm now but I will find time to read you and verbally flog you for mistakes you are probably aware of and have noted yourself, in the style of a true FP reader.

A girl who inspires you to better yourself is a good thing; a girl who demands that you change in order to fit her version of what is "better" is not. There is a difference, though sometimes that difference lies as much within yourself as it does with the other person. People can and do change, but personally, I find it impractical to base affection on what another could be as opposed to what they already are. In any case, it's good that you got away from the latter.

And as far as your novel goes... Holy crap. A high school romance-- I almost didn't believe it until I read it. I must say I'm a little curious to see a guy's take on this overwhelmingly female genre (at least as far as Fictionpress goes).

Sadly, those are pretty much the only kind of girls I've been involved with. That's why I now view dating as something that should be avoided.

You're probably better off. It's a stupid and sadistic ritual.

I saw the fp.net email alert the other day and had a 'holy crap' moment. I was excited to see that you had posted a new story, but that excitement was tempered when I saw that it was a high-school romance. The chapter standing alone didn't exactly grab my attention, but having read this entry I am really interested in seeing how it turns out. If anyone can subvert a genre, it's you. I'm counting on you, Forrest, don't let me down ( ... )
