"best hosting available in UK"

Errr... no. I'd suggest Bytemark. It's machine hosting, rather than just web hosting, so you need a minimal amount of knowledge to set it up, but every interaction I've had with them has been a demonstration in how to run a company. I can't recommend them highly enough.

I mean a thousands pounds a year for a website is not exactly peanuts.

Oh, agreed. But I'm paying £15/month for a virtual server from Bytemark, which should be more than adequate, and is much easier on the wallet. Mine runs web sites, email and DNS for my domains. Depending on the site, you might want to buy a bit more disk space, but that's about all you'll need, I'd think.
