In Dreams

The endless wind on the plains had chapped his lips and dried his skin. He felt exhausted and old. A leathery prune. Roundups in rough weather increasingly sapped his strength, stole his entire will to keep going.

Closing the trailer’s door behind him, he wearily went to say hello to Jack: The shirts, the view of their mountain.

He slept once his head hit the pillow. Here by the secret shrine he knew they would recommence - the energizing, life-giving visits that were his salvation. Jack was gone. Yet in dreams he kept all hurt at bay, and Ennis alive.
