So, I know I'm way late on the uptake, but I finally saw Playing By Heart the other night and really loved it. I found myself grinning through all of Gillian's parts. The character of Meredith is pretty fantastic, and one I think that no one but Gillian could have brought to life so perfectly. I also identified with the character of Meredith

I adore Playing by Heart. It's the first film I reach for if I need cheering up. It's fluffy and sweet without being patronising and sexist, like a lot of romantic comedies are.

I had no idea! And while I think Gillian could've done a great job at Angelina's role, I'm really glad she did Meredith...she has the perfect personality to bring that role to life!

oh man, i TOTALLY almost said that...that i feel like meredith is what scully would've been like if we'd seen that side of her. gillian is definitely talented, but she still made me laugh a lot as meredith. i only wish we'd have seen that completely bonkers side of scully more...it was really cute. you should watch it again! :)

That's funny. I just saw it for the first time myself this morning. I thought it was very, very good. And I was grinning during the Gilly parts so you're not the only one :) Gilly and Jon did have a nice chemistry.

You know, that's funny. I used to hate her. I think it was because like every time I turned around there was something on about her. While I do agree that Gillian is worth 10 Angelina Jolies, I do find myself liking her more than I did before.

My feelings about Angelina have gone in totally the other direction! While there's still some things I think she's okay at, she's really one-dimensional, which annoys the shit out of me. She plays every character, no matter the background, the same exact way. I don't know what about this movie especially annoyed me about her, but there was something I couldn't quite put my finger on.

As for Gilly, I guess she does play that "wall up around her" character well, but I think for all the Scully likeness, Meredith was different because she was really uncensored about her neuroses. She had no false pretenses of having things under control or being sane, and Scully would have NEVER let that be put out there, for sure. Anyhow, as I said in the original post, I related to that character way too much, and I think Gillian played it realistically and subtly and in a way that made me feel kind of hopeful for romance again one day (though to be fair, I'm only 23 so there's still time, hehe).

i saw it for the first time only recently and loved it too! i must say usually i don't favor angelina but i also liked her in that movie.
