My father is slipping slowly away from my family, from himself, into dementia. He no longer remembers his personal history, family members, or friends, and repeats his own full name as if trying desperately to hold onto who he is. ( Read more... )

Hey there, new friend. Came on over to check out your LJ and was saddened to read this. My grandfather, who recently died, dealt with dementia for the last few years. The same man who did missions work for so long couldn't remember names or care for himself, but he could sing hymns and he felt things when the family prayed for him. Looking forward to seeing him again some day when all tears will be wiped away.

Thanks, NJ/DHS Endings can be challenging. Storytelling, remembering, writing it down helps.Talking to friends helps. Reminding ourselves of the bigger picture helps,too.
