A/N: Sorry this took a while, and it’s short, and it’s not as good as I wanted it to be but time is racing and I have lots to do. I hate school...le sigh. Oh and this doesn’t really incorporate Valentine’s day...it did in the original conception but then I forgot and I don’t know how it was originally incorporated so I left it out.
River was a full-fledged, real life, gorram witch. “Ain’t no other reason for it,” muttered Jayne. She had put a spell on him. He found himself constantly watching
her. He watched her dance in the cargo bay as he lifted weights. He watched her draw in the common room as he cleaned his guns. He watched her lick her spoon during a dinner of tasteless protein. He was watching her too much for his liking.
Jayne didn’t want to watch her. But something always drew his eyes to her and then he was caught and couldn’t look away.
And so, Jayne came to the conclusion that River really was a witch. This was how Jayne found himself searching for information on the cortex. He wanted to break the curse and rid the thoughts of River from his mind.
After filtering through a lot of go se, Jayne wrote down some stuff and went off to find River. As he left the bridge, he ran into Simon.
“Does River know how to speak Latin?” asked Jayne as he helped the doctor off the floor.
“The ancient language from Earth-that-was? Of course,” replied Simon, brushing off his pants. “At the age of five, River was -”
“Thanks Doc,” Jayne clapped Simon on the back, sending him into the wall as he strode off down the corridor into the mess. In the lounge area, River was diligently sketching in her book. He walked over and held up the piece of paper with his information.
“Fy-night-in-can-tay-tumm,” Jayne said haltingly. He looked at her triumphantly. River stared up at him.
“The comprehensiveness was lost.”
“Huh?”
“Exactly.” River took the paper from him and glanced at it. “Correct pronunciation would be ‘finite incantatum’. End incantation, in the Latin.”
Jayne nodded. “So yer spell has to be done now. ‘S gone, I’m good now.”
River laughed. “Jayne-man thinks I am a fairytale stereotype? That I can put a curse on whomever I choose?” She leaned forwards and whispered, “I am psychic and read minds. I am not a witch; I haven’t been in congress.”
Jayne growled angrily. “Like hell, girl! You put a damn spell on me an’ I can’t getcha out of my mind. You used hypno-somethin’ or messed with my head with yer reader skills or somethin’.”
“No need to get angry,” snapped River. “I haven’t done anything to you.”
Jayne sighed. “I ain’t angry. Jus’ bothered, I guess. I don’t know what’s wrong with me.”
River smirked. “Silly Jayne-man. It has been a long time, but you will remember soon.” She stood up and took a step closer to him. Jayne swallowed heavily. She was staring up at him through her lashes. The air seemed to get thicker and hotter.
“I will give you a hint,” she said softly. River rose on her tip toes and placed her hands on his chest. Jayne’s moth fell open and she jumped up and kissed him on the mouth.
Before he had time to react, she flashed a smile and ran away giggling. Bewildered, Jayne sat on the couch. “Weren’t no spell, I got a gorram crush!” Moaning, he put his head in his hands and stayed there for a long time.
