Dean has lost contact with Sam due to his refusal to become Michael's vessel. Five years later, he is empty. What happened within those five years and what will happen after? And, more importantly, is this real or hallucinatory? ( cast )
Three weeks after he last spoke with Dean in his car, Castiel could sense a heavy disturbance. Dean had been doing an annoyingly good job at keeping his location unknown and it was making him regret putting the insignia on the Winchesters. After a successful phone call from Bobby, he finally got a location and apparated in Dean's hotel room.
"Correct," he said. The angel walked over to the back corner of the room and just stood there, eyes transfixed on Dean.
"It is dangerous to lose you with Lucifer growing stronger. I must stay, but will interfere as little as possible," Castiel explained before falling silent, expecting Dean to carry on with whatever he had been doing prior.
Dean held the Angel's gaze. Of course he wouldn't say anything else. He only spoke when necessary to inform.
"And Sam?" Dean's voice was almost...pained.
He stared down at the controller again before tossing it aside. "What about Sam? Am I just supposed to hang out watching Casa Erotica as my brother becomes the freaking devil?"
He tilted his head slightly when Dean addressed him but did not answer at first. He didn't want to fight with Dean, whom he considered a friend as well as a good man. His situation was quite unfortunate but it was his destiny.
Castiel was ready to correct him but Dean remembered. He spent the duration of the night standing his post dutifully. He had spent a thousand years guarding one plot of land so one night was nothing.
In the morning, he disappeared for a few moments and returned with a plate full of the hotel's complimentary breakfast and placed it on the table for Dean.
Dean, eyes still closed, smelled bacon. And eggs. And toast with jam. He rubbed his eyes before opening them to a delightful sight.
"Well I'll be damned," his eyes glazed over all the food, not knowing where to start. So, of course, he started forking it into his mouth like he hadn't eaten in days (which very well might be true).
"We both know that I am a male, Dean," he pressed. "You do what you always do," he said, leaning back in his chair just the slightest. "Keep saying no to Michael. Look for an alternative to the apocalypse. There is not much I have to say that you do not know already."
"And what will happen if I say yes, Cas?" Dean's eyes widened slightly, barely noticeable. "Sam dies. Lucifer dies. Everybody dies."
Dean sighed, running a hand through his hair. "It's a no-win situation and I'm not killing my brother."
He blinked. "But I'm not letting anyone else do it either."
"Goddammit!" he was frustrated now. "Why couldn't I have been Lucifer's vessel? Then Sam could just send me back where I came from. Then things would be the way they're supposed to - the way they have to be!"
Castiel remained motionless, used to Dean yelling and venting at him when there really wasn't much that can be done. "There is no use in wishing that your destiny was different," he said stoically. "I suggest you exert your energy in more productive things than whining."
"Like what? A scrapbook?" Dean narrowed his eyes. "Dean and Sammy's big adventure. This is the one that killed their mom. Then there's this one that killed our dad. And this one and this one. Finally, here's Michael himself all high and mighty." Dean's voice boomed at the last bit.

"You mind?" he turned off the tv, not that that had been the distraction anyway. He had just been on edge.
He fiddled with the remote, trying to calm himself before replying.
"So you found me. Bobby, right?"
