I don't personally work with .gif animations, but I've heard that the GIMP Animation Package is the best tool for working with animated .gifs in GIMP. There are more links for it on this community's profile page. :)

Thank you for your quick reply! I'll definitely check that out. I'd rather not start over once I installed the GAP, though, I already put too much time and effort into this project; do you know whether it's possible to simply switch within gimp from the normal mode to the animation package or whether files have to be created with the GAP right from the start? Also, is that package compatible with gimp 2.8 by now? I found a lot of different info about that on the internet so I'm not quite sure.
