A/N: This is all for stellaluna_, and completely her fault. She wanted a story with Mac or Danny and a cat, and this is what I ended up coming up with. Created with a lot of effort and outside of my normal box because I love her, and as such, she pretty much gets whatever she wants. Much thanks to scarletts_awry for the editing help and reassurance.

She sits on the sill of the open window, flicking the tip of her tail as she quietly watches the man moving around inside. She's been watching him for a while now, on and off for a few weeks. He seems the best choice for a human companion, a mostly solitary type like herself. She thinks he would be a much more suitable match than any of the other humans that she found to be of any interest in her search. He gives off an aura of safety and security, and after the chaos of the streets, she could do with some peace and quiet.

She shuffles in a bit closer, toward the edge of the sill and almost down onto the counter. She doesn't want to push too much too fast, however, because she can already tell that he's going to be the type that takes time. He soon spots her and comes over to the counter, shouting a bit and making a fuss, trying to shoo her back out the window. She likes the sound of his voice, smooth and low, even with the angry tones-- but with any luck it won't sound that way for long.

She stands her ground, sitting quietly and trying not to look threatening. Humans don't like their dominance challenged too much, and she doesn't want to ruin her chances of success over something as silly as that. As long as she doesn't scare or threaten her new human, he seems like the type that could be trained to let her run things her way.

She waits, tilting her head to the side a bit as she watches him. He protests her presence quite a bit, but never moves to strike her or force her off the windowsill. He's frowning and clearly upset, but doesn't try to hurt her. She flicks her tail in pleasure for being right; she knew this one wouldn't be the hitting type, not like the man from when she was a kitten.

As he stares at her silently with deep disapproval etched on his face, she saunters out the window and turns back to watch him. The man frowns more-- she didn't know humans could look so funny upset like that--but she figures this is the easiest way to teach him how things should work. He seems smart enough to get it, and she's encouraged by the fact he's still staring at her. He shuts the window and she watches him for a few more minutes before wandering off down the alley. A closed window won't stop her.

She comes back the next night and watches him as he moves about the apartment, talking authoritatively into one of the ringing things. She finds that she likes listening to him, especially when this alpha side comes out, although she's a bit ashamed to admit it. He tries to shoo her away again as soon as he spots her sitting on the edge of the sill, but isn't nearly as forceful as before.

Again she sits and waits, watching as he goes through the same set of strange angry words and gestures, still never laying a finger on her. When he's all done, she goes through the same routine of walking out the window on her own terms, stopping to watch him from just outside. This time he seems to take notice of her behavior, quietly staring back at her while she looks at him. Maybe he's starting to learn; guess she'll find out soon enough.

The next time he goes to chase her out, he's much quieter and watches her carefully the whole time. It seems he's catching on, and this pleases her greatly. When he's completely silent and still, she rewards his good choice by turning and walking out on her own. When she looks back, he's watching her intently, as if trying to put together pieces of a puzzle. This one learns fast, and she likes it. She knew she was on the right track with picking him, and now she's even more sure of it.

The time after that, he doesn't raise his voice at all, but still watches her intently. She decides to take a slow step toward him, arching her head forward and trying to encourage him to pet her. He very tentatively reaches out, petting her just once or twice before withdrawing his hand and frowning again. Better progress, she figures. She could keep this one yet-- and she was really hoping to.

He scratches her ears on the next visit, and she purrs and leans into his fingers to encourage him. A few more visits and he finally spends more than a few seconds petting her before gently lifting her under her ribs and setting her outside. She has to shake herself off and groom her fur back into place, but she liked the feeling of his big and gentle hands cradling her.

She is pleased to find that it is taking much less time to train this one than she expected. She really likes this human, and could get used to staying around permanently if things work out. As she comes by more frequently she takes small steps at being bolder, testing the limits to see how he reacts. When she takes a big step and sits on the kitchen counter, he frowns deeply when he finds her there, making low, disapproving noises-- but no yelling and no shooing. She doesn't do anything more than sit, and after a few minutes he starts to move about the apartment again, shooting glances at her every few seconds as if she would suddenly destroy everything in reach.

The next week she finds an empty tuna can waiting for her with the packing water left in it. She cleans every bit of the can and purrs loudly when he comes into the kitchen, walking up and down the counter to get his attention. She needs to reward him for his good behavior and show her appreciation, after all.

He stops and watches her, hesitating for a moment, and walks over and starts to pet her. She purrs and rubs against his fingers, nuzzling into his hand. He gives her a small smile, and she knows she's won now. He'll take much more time and patience, but now she's sure she made the right choice in picking him.
