He fingers the sharp corners of the paper bird as he contemplates it. Origami. A sheet of paper doesn’t really seem like anything too dangerous, just full of potential. At least until someone gets a hold of it and writes their latest experiment on it; it seems to him that some of the people in this town wouldn’t have to do anything more than that to cause absolute chaos. On the surface, origami doesn’t really seem like a Nathan thing to do, not as thrilling as creating plans for world domination or working on the next project to win another Nobel prize.

He inspects the delicate object a bit longer, carefully pulling at and refolding the sharp creases in a vain attempt to tease out its construction. He may not have Henry’s knack for taking things apart and putting them back together, but he does know his way around a normal set of tools (not the Eureka enhanced versions) and can pick up on things pretty quickly if he can understand how they work. He always enjoyed tinkering with things on the rare occasion he was home, although Abby never seemed to think he could do anything right, much less fix a leaking pipe or build a shed.

When he refolds a piece the wrong way, he realizes that Nathan having an interest in origami just might make sense after all. It’s very deliberate, clean and linear, and the attention to detail and spatial skills needed have to come from a sharp & focused mind. The infinite possibilities from a single piece of paper would appeal to his scientist side, and Nathan’s precise nature is practically ingrained in him. Knowing Nathan, he probably wouldn’t stop until he had completely mastered the art, and is capable of making more than just a simple bird that has somehow landed on Jack’s desk. He smiles as he imagines watching Nathan’s fingers deftly manipulate the sharp edges of paper, quietly bringing delicate shapes to life from his big hands.

Even if he can imagine Nathan constructing the bird, it still doesn’t explain why he came in to find a simple and absolutely perfect paper bird sitting on his desk. Why a bird? Why not something more scientific, like some sort of molecule, or maybe even some sort of paper weapon of destruction? Or something functional, something practical, like a box?

He shakes his head, but still can’t stop the little smile that escapes.

A bird.

It’s going to take a very long time until he really understands Nathan, but strangely enough, it doesn’t bother him.
