Allison sighs, curling in closer to his chest, stroking her hand up and down it softly. ”It’s ok, baby.”
There’s still an undercurrent of tension coursing through his body, even after making love. He’s been like this since they’ve gotten back together, but worst on the days they’ve had to work closest with Carter. At first she thought it was him being scared of losing her again, but after their latest adventure in Lab 27 and the rumors of a conversation between Nathan and Eva, everything just clicked into place.
She sighs, steeling herself for the reaction she knows she is going to get, holding tight to him in silent support. He doesn’t always have to be the strong one, as much as he believes it to be the case. “I know better than anyone else what it’s like to be torn between two people. It’s tough, I know.” He freezes for a second and then tries to push her away, move off the bed and escape. When she won’t let him go and forces him to stay with her, his grip on her becomes even tighter than before, almost desperate.
“I love you, Ali,” he says adamantly, but there’s an edge to his voice that he just can’t hide.
“I know that baby, I know. Or I wouldn’t be here right now.” Her hand keeps up its slow strokes, and he relaxes a bit, but doesn’t let go. It’s a start.
“I just know you love him too. And I understand.” The only thing that gives him away is the one single shuddering sigh that rattles in his chest before he pulls her up to him and kisses her thoroughly.
