He thought he had prepared himself for anything she was going to say, had something all figured out for any of the possibilities. Yet when it came down to it, the words still hit him like a freight train.
She’s serious.
This isn’t just about the fun, mind blowing sex or the thrill of chasing the beautiful, dangerous, challenging creature that enchanted him the moment he saw her walk in through the cell bars. This just became something very real, and it makes his brain short circuit.
He stays silent too long and she takes it as rejection, moving away from him and curling within herself.
“I’ve… I gotta go,” she says, looking away quickly but not fast enough to hide the hurt in her eyes and the crack in her voice. Something in his chest tears at the sound, and he didn’t think something like this could hurt like that. Maybe it really is more serious to him than he first realized.
Zane grabs her wrist, ignoring the pain that flashes in his arm as her fingers rub against the bandages as she tries to pull her hand away.
He can’t let her go. Not now.
When he doesn’t let go, she turns back to him, and he feels a mix of dread and relief. She won’t look him in the eyes right now, which isn’t Jo, but she’s not beating the shit out of him yet either. Thank god for small miracles.
He doesn’t know what to say, but knows inherently that right now is the breaking point. If he fucks this up, it’s over. And even though he’s not sure he wants it to be serious, he definitely knows he’s not ready for her to leave him either.
“Look… I… Just give me time, ok? I just…” He just doesn’t know, other than it can’t be over yet. It’d hurt too much.
He’s never been the settling, ‘normal life’ kind of guy. Hell, this time in Eureka is just about as long as he’s been in one place for most of his life, and the first time he’s felt really at home somewhere, like he could stay permanently. That’s hard enough to adjust to, and then when you add in a serious relationship, it’s too much for him to even want to think about.
She still won’t look at him, and something in that hurts deeply too. He takes her chin gently in his hand and forces her to look at him, and the hurt and embarrassment shining brightly in her eyes makes the pain twist in his chest again for making her feel this way. But he’s scared and unsure himself, and just can’t help reacting how he does.
“Please.”
She nods ever so slightly against his hand, and he feels a bit better. He lets go of her chin and leans in and places a gentle kiss on her forehead as she lays a gun-callused hand softly on his cheek.
It’s not much, but it’s something.
