A girl. We're having a girl! Ok, well, Ali’s having a girl, he thinks. If he hadn’t been sitting down already, he thinks he would have fallen over. Everything just became that much more real, although Ali’s slowly growing belly was a constant reminder.
Back when they had the genetic tests done to confirm that it really was Nathan and not him that was the father, Ali had decided that she didn’t want to know what sex the baby was yet. He respected that, even if he’s never been good with surprises. Even though he knew the chances were slim, part of him had hoped that the baby was his. It just would have made things easier for everybody in the long run.
A girl. He’s already had a girl- a beautiful, passionate, trying, smart, miracle that somehow he managed to not screw up despite all his best (or worst) efforts. He better not do the same with this one. Another little princess to spoil, another woman that will have him wrapped around their little finger before they’re even old enough to talk. Tea parties and baseball- ok, softball- and pink everything everywhere.
He had been hoping for a boy, a son to bring up with his mother and father’s love of science and his passion for sports. He was going to try to keep the kid on the normal side, give him a little of both so that he could cope in and outside of Eureka. He wanted to have a son that could live on in Nathan’s name, but follow in either one of their footsteps, whoever the kid chose to be.
When he feels her kick against his hand, he remembers the first time he felt Zoe do the same. The same crazy feeling of excitement-- that he’s walking off a cliff blindfolded with no clue what to do except love this child more than life itself. This time he knows all the things he’s done wrong and never wants to do again, but he wants for this new baby all the things that turned out right about Zoe too.
He wonders what she’s going to look like-Ali’s soft mocha skin, Nathan’s curls? Nathan’s bright green eyes or Ali’s soft brown? Nathan’s tall, loose limbs or Ali’s delicate frame? She’ll be perfect, he thinks. No matter who she looks like.
Ali smiles at him, a genuine smile, and it cuts into his heart. He misses her, misses them. Misses Nathan. Misses all of them and the way it used to be. Misses those nights sandwiched between Nathan’s sharp lean angles and Ali’s soft curves, being completely possessed by both of them.
It just wasn’t, couldn’t be the same without Nathan. In their grief he and Ali needed each other, but not in that way any more. Maybe someday they can give their new baby girl a proper home all under one roof. She won’t lack for love and attention in the meantime.
Then again, maybe someday Nathan will return too. Kim did, so why not him?
