He was talking about his book on The Da Vinci Code in class today. He'll be in Toronto on Saturday for a TV interview about it; he's concerned about missing the basketball game.

"I study under Ehrman," I said to myself today. " 'Under' as in 'he looks down on me.' Far down. Because 'I am a pathetic student.' "

I don't think undergraduate necessarily counts as "studying under," depending on who you're talking to. But if you were a grad student, he would still look down on you. The difference would be that you would get to help in his research if you were "studying under" him in the traditional sense. That's how I understand it anyway.

It would be much more convenient for me if he liked you, Scott. I might try to apply to Chapel Hill again some day.

That would be interesting. I'd have to take a while to learn about religion first. I got the impression that I know much, much less about Religion, Ethics and Philosophy than the typical entering REP student, not having read a drop of Aquinas, Derrida, Durkheim, Hegel, Heidegger, Kant, Levinas, Maimonides, Marx, or Neichtze for example. I have a lot of extracurricular reading to do, and even then I'll probably switch to American Religious History after the first semester.

There are a lot of directions a book like that could take. There are a lot of assumptions people have about both religion and science that it could dispel. We should do that. Mayve we could make a handful of people a little less silly.
