And nope, I don't think text is necessary either. Even lately I haven't been adding much text to the icons I make and such.
I see the point of not adding a signature - people'll steal regardless (woe!) I still add a small one just in case people want to know who made it/visit my graphics community sometime in the future, though :)

I've taken to adding my journal name in the actual file name itself. I find that most people can't be bothered to change file names when they download it anyway, so that way they can still find out who made it months down the track without requiring a sig. :)
And as for having no date, I figure what's more important for me is the ordering of the walls rather than exactly when I made something. So by numbering 001-999 I can see how each wall improves (or doesn't improve lol) on the previous.
Naw, text isn't that big of a deal, and signatures are kind of pointless because people will steal anyway. If text will make a certain wallpaper better or cooler, then great. If not, then it's all right to just leave it alone.
I'm of the firm belief that there is *too much* text in most wallpaper. I'll love the visuals and be completely turned off by words. That's one of the reasons your wallpapers usually grace my desktop! Especially the nice magenta/purpley River Tam one.
It goes back to that whole artistic expression knack that you're awesome with.
