I hate the electoral college system. I've been thinking of making it my personal campaign to write to everyone and their brother about it. Constantly. For years on end.

I find the electoral system strange and archaic. Still, it's also interesting to look at the overall results. If you look at the electoral results, it was a landslide for Obama (63% to 30%). However, in a pure general election, the race was much tighter (52% to 46%). I find it fascinating that most of the red states seem to be very red, but because their population density of conservatives is so high, there is no extra point to reflect how strongly the state feels as a whole. I think when I have some free time, I might figure out how the electoral college would have gone if you kept the electors, but proportionally divided among the candidates based on votes. In such a system, even though you still vote for electors rather than candidates, the votes in every state would count and would draw candidates away from "battleground" states to raise their averages in all states. I don't know if that would work, but it might be a nice compromise in the system.
