This is basically a rant against people who think they're not racist, but in such subtle ways they don't recognize it. Especially around my kids, who thankfully are grown enough to give people who are racist a big eye roll, even if it's their grandmother ( Read more... )

My mother in law isn't quite that openly racist,(or she's just savvy enough not to use the N word in public...her mother was a school teacher and she went to college) but I've seen definite signs of discomfort around black people (especially men) and anyone who isn't distinctly white, middle class looking ( ... )

He is one of me, too. I always think that if his vision had not survived, I would not have had the family that I do. If there was still the same prejudice, I might not have been able to adopt a black child, so I am always grateful to Dr. King.

True, and I would not have two first cousins who are black adopted by my aunt and uncle who are definitely part of my family either.

Maybe it's because I've lived 50 years, but I've seen a lot of attitude change in my life. My parents saw the beginning of big changes, I saw many more, and now my children see considerably less racism, thankfully, except in these annoying subtle ways which drive me insane.

I'll shut up about it when I see all of it gone. It's zero tolerance for me on that subject.
