Working in the library at Temple this morning, I found a book about the Klan's campaign against Jews in Mississippi during the civil rights movement in the 60s.
Terror in the Night by Jack Nelson. I'm about halfway through reading it now ( Read more... )

I think the Jews in the South at the time get a free pass in history by being associated with the Jews of the North who were more active in the Movement. Everyone remembers the two white kids killed in Mississippi were Jewish, no one asks who in the local community cared.

Well, they paid the price in terror, even though they were not active in the movement.

Thanks for this, it's something I was completely unaware of and I found it very interesting.

I am still rather certain that the NEXT pogrom [against Jews] will be happening in the USA. Probably within the next 5-10 years.

Forget the south, growing up in NY CITY in the 70-80s, my cousins wouldn't dare wear a yarmulke on the street.

I think you're right. I think that things are going to get worse before they get better, especially if Glenn Beck keeps on with his antisemitic crap.

In terms of which ethnic group is gonna get it first, though, I think that American Muslims are a much more likely target at the moment because there has been such blatant prejudice, discrimination, misinformation, and hatemongering against them.
But no matter the intergroup tensions between us (i.e., between Jews and Muslims), we have to stand with them here in the USA because if we don't, we will be next. That is a fact.
