So a girl that goes to school with my son was raped at school one day last week. My son knows her.I asked him if he'd heard about the incident, and he said "Yeah, that's (X)." He didn't know the boys involved, but had heard that they were some of the boys who had failed 7th and 8th grade repeatedly and so were 14 or 15 years old ( Read more... )

“It’s just an alleged sexual assault,” police Capt. Dray Swicord, a detective, said Thursday. “So we’re trying to see who’s telling the truth.”

Please tell me he didn't really say that!! I think that is one of the worst parts. The detective even said something to make it sound like it was all BS. Grrrrr. I wish it was possible for you to just get up and move away from that. I live in the backwoods of Texas, and even here the police wouldn't say that... Of course, those boys may have found themselves lynched after anyone got a good look at her bruises, which may not be any better.

When the football player raped the college student in the restroom of the bar last year, the cops took pictures with him because they were impressed by his celebrity. So.... that's the mentality around here.

Thank you for telling your son what I'd consider the proper way to respond to this situation.

Isn't it an outrage that parents are often still so knuckle-headed in what they pass on to their kids about these things. We are supposed to be so far beyond that now, where violence against girls and women is not considered suspect/the girl brought it on.
Your son is a good kid and sounds like he wouldn't ever get caught up in 'mass opinions'.

I think it's only in abstract that violence against girls/women is considered a bad thing and not something that the bitch deserved. Whenever it's a specific case, the cries of "she's a liarmouth bitch out to ruin his life" come out before the ink is dry on the police complaint.

I think you're exactly right. I've noticed this before, both with rape and with racism. In most people's minds, the terms "rape" and "racism" seem to denote things that are so horrible, so beyond the pale, that people simply cannot connect these terms to anything that actually happens in real life.

You're absolutely right, considering our State laws and all the language changes from "victims" to "accusers."

That's horrible. I mean what happened is, and people's reaction was horrible too, including the police.

I'm glad you had such a good discussion with your son though. He does sound like a great kid.

Good for you for teaching your son to stand up for victims.
