Happy New Year (and parakeets!)

wieselkind and I were having a cup of tea this morning before she had to catch her train, when a very loud screeching noise came from outside. I looked up and saw three birds, and was about to turn away again when Heather noted they were parakeets! I should have recognized the shape in flight but I don't really expect to see parrots in England so it wasn't ( Read more... )

My mother has had them eating her apples for years. By coincidence, I saw a few here for the first time in the snow about 2 weeks ago.

I believe the species' home range is the Himalayan foothills. They need a nice warm hole to shelter in, though.

Also, not only did I not realize there were parrots in the U.K. (sorry, don't have the attention span to watch the embedded docu upthread right now), but I'm surprised that they stick around for the winter.

They are resident here now, and have been for about 30 years. Started from a small population of feral escapees.
