So, I'm taking a class in early childhood education and I need some help from my friends with children. Like tomorrow. Teacher gave it to us last minute. It happens. I need to get the answers to the following questions from people I know with children in school or childcare ( Read more... )

Thank you very much for helping me out. Since you have been both a mother and a teacher I find your answers very thoughtful and insightful, as you can see both sides.

And, if you can possibly help it, don't schedule the conference early in the year & never have another one. This seems to be a consistent feature in schools, & it's the dumbest thing imaginable. Early on, what could there be to discuss?? Later is when these things are needed!

I never specifically thought about it as a partnership, but it absolutely is. Prime example: teacher sends home homework. If I don't hold up my end of the partnership, it may not get done, or done correctly ( ... )

Thank you for your experiences. Not only were they helpful, but I find your writing entertaining. (I hope you understand what I'm trying to say, and that is a complement.)

I was certainly hoping you'd find it entertaining instead

I'd say a limited partnership. Teacher has 22 kids in her class, I work. I don't see as much of her as I would like. As a teacher I feel the same way--as if I don't get to develop the relationship I would like to with my kids' parents. It's hard to do, but it really feels wonderful when it happens, either way ( ... )

Thank you for your help. Again I feel it is very good to see it from both sides. Your insights are great.

Do you feel that you and the teacher have a partnership, why or why not?

I am a veteran of numerous such partnerships, which indeed they are. Some teachers have been better at acknowledging this relationship than others, but that is understandable. I'm happy if a teacher connects with my kid. Did I say happy? Ecstatic.

How does the school/teacher encourage parent participation? how are you motivated by the school to participate?

When we were in a traditional schooling situation, the school did plenty of evening programming - math enrichment workshops, game nights, what-have-you. We'd try to go to everything and we always saw the same families there. The school provided the venue but I suspect the motivation came from elsewhere.

Are there specific reasons why you tend to participate? Are there specific reasons that you tend to not participate? The primary reason I would participate would be to make sure the kids knew how important their school was to our family. A side benefit was getting to meet some of their friends and ( ... )

Thank you for your help. An online charter school, I've never heard of such a thing. LOL, thanks to you saying 'door prizes', we learned that in DC they are paying students for grades and Wisconsin is paying parents to participate! I need to look up and find out the details.
