Read the Sign!

 Ok. So a few days ago I worked the evening shift, which I don't usually do since i'm a fri through sat person.

It's a little into the evening, i'm going to say about 7 or 8 pm(i think....) and I had been upstairs checking out a room that a guest was staying in because she smelt something burning in her room. o_O Well it smelled really bad and I grabbed my GM to go up with me so we could figure out what to do, it smelled like burnt hair, almost as if you left your curling iron on your hair too long or got the hair dryer too close to your hair. Anyways, we could not figure out where the smell was coming from and checked the surrounding rooms, none of them had that smell(o_O even weirder...) I was gone from the FD for about 15-20mins.

NOW, here's the sign story,

Whenever we leave the FD we have a sing we are supposed to place there saying we'll be back in a moment and if the guest reading the sign needs immediate attention to please go to the phone by the stairs (which will call us on our cordless while we're not there.)

3 guests are standing there, a couple and another lady checking in separately.

Me: Hello
Lady in the couple: We've been waiting here for 15minutes to check in.
Me: I'm sorry about the wait mam, I did have this sign up (she cuts me off)
LC: That says you'll  be back in a moment, I've been here for 15 minutes, this is unacceptable. (seriously? the sign also says call us....)
ME: I understand mam, but it also says here(i point to line on the sign.) That you can also go to the phone over by the stairs over there(i point) to get speak with someone.

(We make round abouts, me saying the same thing, and her saying the same thing..not sure what she expects me to do. I had my sign up and she didn't read it....)

LC: Well that is just completely unprofessional.(Okaaay.) I've never been to a hotel where I've had to wait to be checked in. (UH...I'm sure. *rolls eyes internaly*) We've been on a plane and want to check in, not have to wait.
Me: I understand that mam, unfortunately I wasn't up here because I was helping a guest in their room. Which is why I had the sign up, it is our policy to place a sign up when we are not at the FD.
LC: Well I just don't think it is acceptable and unprofessional to have a sign sitting there.(YEa ok, would you rather have stood there for 15minutes with no one around just wandering like an idiot?? Didn't think so... well i guess she did since she didn't read the sign!)

I was irritated, and a dumb conversation, she was just annoying! She wanted a discount for her stay....her reservation was made with a rack gov rate(pretty low a
Type your cut contents here.lready)  but she was with a local company so I changed it to their rate,( it was only $4 less than she was paying) but I wasn't going to give her a huge discount because she couldn't read. It was stupid.
Best part was when I told my GM about it. My GM was like, you had the sign up...Right? Did she go to the phone? Me: No. She kept telling me the sign says i'd be back in a moment....she said it's unprofessional and unacceptable to have to wait there and for us to have the sign. I told her it was policy to have the sign but...yeeea. Apparently it's unprofessional..., GM: Exactly, it's our policy, you had to have the sign up and we were upstairs.(trying to find that mysterious burning smell.)
