Civil unions don't work because, in the minds of homophobic people, they aren't marriages, and they will squirm and find every which way to deny those selfsame rights, as far as they can. It's pessimistic, but it's a fact.

I agree. "Different but equal" is a contradiction in terms when it comes to these rights.
