I'm having loads of problems with the only reporter that reports to me. She keeps submitting stories that are empty, no quotes, or no explanations for things that happen. She puts things in her story lead that she can't explain to me when I ask her about it. She writes economic polls that are nothing but an enumeration of numbers with no meaning ( Read more... )

She's been around for nine or so years I think. :( It's actually sad that she still works like this.

Sorry, I know I should be consoling you but I find your subordinate funny. If I was in your position, I'd probably be boiling, too, haha!

Where do her stories come from? She interviews but she doesn't quote? How is that? .. Maybe she's annoyed that someone way younger than her is her boss. Which is why she behaves like that. Hm.

I have no idea why she behaves that way. Does she resent me for being her boss?

Yesterday she gave me a story which was just "he said" all the way with not even a bit of analysis. WTH?!!!

You did good, and you were soft, even. You were not really asking for her to exceed her expectations, just to do her bit properly. But I know it's not easy just scowl someone older than you, who has been working more time than you, but yeah. Bosses have to demand their staff do a good job, otherwise is them on the line.

I really don't ask her to exceed expectations because I'm not even sure I can do that myself. :( But yeah, the ones on top of me have been asking around about our stories, her reports especially. :s

It might be worth sitting down with her and working through a rewrite. It's tougher doing it face to face, sure. But if she's been doing this for that long, it's possible your emails and texts are easier for her too. Easier to ignore.

I might do the face to face thing one of these days. Have to brace myself for that because I'm not really comfortable with these bossly things.
