A terrific post! I too came from an Italian family (my mom's side, anyway) and enjoyed big family gatherings when I was a child. I even wrote a little booklet about 10 years ago about our family Christmases. I still miss those days.
I'm still working on how to "make Christmas my own/our own." It's a tough one.
You know, I never realized how the smell of REAL pine puts me in the Christmas mood, too. Tom's mom sends a wreath every year and Tom puts it on the back kitchen wall and every time I pass it, it's like "oh, yes!" I need to find more of that for around the house, as well.
And yes, "the idea of doing more" = stress is NEVER a good thing. It's funny how the holidays have changed from a quiet peaceful time with family to OUTRAGEOUS MORENESS ALL THE TIME. I am not okay with that. Not all my family understands my position, and that's fine. It's my season, and my only real job is make sure it's special for one person- and her name is Gracie.
