They drove to the office of Angel Investigations in silence. Wesley was contemplating Oz, and Oz was lost in thought. Wesley hesitated to call it companionable silence; something was clearly on Oz’s mind. He’d been brooding ever since they got into the car.
“Here we are,” Wesley declared at last.
Oz nodded, and they both got out of the car. Wesley walked around to Oz, and put his arm around Oz to help him inside. The first thing he noticed inside was Cordelia. She was reading over a huge stack of paper work, but looked up as they entered.
“Hi Wes, and … Oz?”
Wesley nodded solemnly.
“He showed up on my doorstep yesterday.”
“Wow. You look pretty bad.”
Oz nodded. “I barely escaped.”
Now Cordelia looked troubled, and she and Wesley turned to him with frank curiosity.
“I’ll tell you everything when Angel gets here.”
Suddenly Oz sniffed the air.
“Which is now.”
Angel looked the same as always, ready to fight the good fight.
“Is something going on?’ asked Angel. Wesley and Cordelia turned to Oz, who nodded.
“How much do you know about he Initiative?”
Cordelia and Wesley looked completely baffled, but Angel’s face took on a dark look.
“Did they hurt you?’
Oz nodded. “They captured me.”
He shuddered in remembered terror.
‘Tell us more about this group. What’s their purpose?” Wesley wanted desperately to understand.
“It’s a group run by the government of soldiers who capture demons and experiment on them. Like Spike.”
Angel seemed torn between amusement and anger at the thought.
“Wait, so wouldn’t they be the good guys?” asked Cordelia.
Oz shook his head. “Would you consider someone ‘good’ if they gave you electrical shocks just so they could watch you transform from werewolf to human and back again?”
Cordelia shook her head in horrified silence. Wesley looked suddenly furious, and Angel began pacing the room.
“If Riley had anything to do with this…” snarled Angel.
Oz shook his head. “No, Buffy’s boyfriend helped me escape, is even going into hiding.”
Cordelia looked shocked. “You mean Buffy’s dating one of them?”
Angel nodded confirmation. He still couldn’t believe it either.
Oz shrugged. “I don’t know Riley well, but I’m grateful that he helped me escape.”
Wesley nodded. “I for one am extremely grateful.”
”It’s about the only good thing he’s done,” declared Angel.
Cordelia looked skeptical. “Since when are you a Riley expert?”
“Since I met him. Pompous, arrogant kid tried to stake me.”
Cordelia laughed. “Which has nothing to do with the fact that you’re Buffy’s ex?”
Angel glared at her. “He attacked me before he know how I was, when he learned it was me, well…”
“He pressed the attack,” guessed Wesley.
Angel nodded. Wesley looked at Oz in concern.
“Did you receive all these wounds attempting to escape?”
Oz shook his head. “Later I ran in to some trouble because other werewolves attacked me.”
Wesley looked intrigued. “You mean they actually lived together as a pack?”
Oz shrugged. “ I think so, there was one who seemed extra tough, and he challenged me.”
Angel put an arm comfortingly around Oz’s shoulder.
“You’re safe now.”
Wesley felt an instant flare of jealousy. He wanted to be able to touch Oz so casually and have such an easy relationship with him. The honest truth was that they barely knew each other, although he liked Oz, and for certain respected him. He trusted Oz, and was hopeful that the younger man trusted him as well. But, there was no way for Wesley to be certain at this point.
“Well, come on Wes, don’t you have some ancient nook to be cracking open?”
The sound of Cordelia’s voice brought him out of his thoughts.
“What?”
Cordelia laughed. ”I would think you’d be bursting to learn more about werewolves and why a pack of them would target Oz.”
Angel nodded his agreement.
‘We need to help Oz.”
A slow smile spread across Oz’s face.
”Thanks.”
“Helping the helpless is our motto Oz. Not that you’re helpless by any means, but I believe you know what I’m trying to say,” declared Wesley.
Oz nodded. “I do, and I appreciate it.”
“Well, my books are calling.”
“I can help.”
“I would appreciate it.”
Cordelia smiled at the sight of two them walking together to a table, and Wesley proceeding to retrieve a pile of books. The two them were rather cute bent together over the books. She jerked he head toward Angel’s office, and he followed her in.
“Look at them,” she ordered.
“What?”
“Wesley likes Oz.”
“Who doesn’t? Oz is likeable.”
”No Angel, I mean that Wesley has feelings for Oz. At least a crush, quite likely more.”
“How can you tell?’
Cordelia sighed. “You men are hopeless. I just can.”
Angel nodded, and watched her step out of his office. He began to brood immediately.
