Animal Shelter and Euthaniasia Reflections

Oct 21, 2010 08:35

If you are seeing this both here and on Facebook I apologize. I have a LOT of people I only have on one or the other. But yes, I wrote this reflection the other night after watching a very tough video on euthanasia and animal shelters. Under the cut is the video (warning: it will probably make you cry, esp if you like animals), my reflection, and ( Read more... )

This is a lot like the argument for hunting that I support. If done responsibly it controls deer herds in a way the local predators are unable to due to their own decline in numbers for various reasons. The alternative to this is an increase in the number of deer being killed by vehicles or just starving to death which I find to be a much more horrific ending.

Its part of the reason I wasn't particularly bothered when I volunteered in a non no kill shelter. Although it is really horrible seeing some of the animals go there's only so many homes out there and by keeping them locked in a cage indefinitely hoping someone will come some day isn't a very good alternative. Still you're doing something good no matter how often you talk about it, spreading the word about shelter animals. If only people would care less about PETA and more about the ASPCA things would be much easier on the animals that actually need it.

That is actually an interesting point! And yes, your view on hunting is 100% my own. My father in law is actually a hunter, and it is SO important to the ecosystem because yeah - there are no more predators to keep them in check. Obviously, you want it to be done responsibly and in a way that is not cruel, illegal, etc, but when done right, it honestly HELPS the deer for all the reasons you just said.

And exactly. My shelter in particular does try to keep the cats and dogs for as long as possible and/or put them in a rescue or foster home if it seems long term. But what it does boil down to is it really isn't fair to keep them in a cage forever. It is heartbreaking, but stopping the euthanasia unfortunately will not mean the animals will live full happy lives (which I am sure PETA or other extremist might try to argue.) The only thing that will stop it is if people are responsible and spay neuter.

So TL;DR, WOOOOOOOORD to your comment.

I read everything, but watched the video. I can only tolerate seeing so much of animal suffering. I am always about to cry whenever I watch Animal Cops. When watching the Philly one I instantly messaged Kate telling her she had messed up people in her neighborhood ( ... )

*huuuuugs* Thank you for reading hon. I'm so glad to have friends who adopted from those without homes, and who would care for sick pets. Stuff like this is SO SO hard and disheartening but having friends who care help. *HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGS*

Cats, dogs, and other animals are a huge commitment, and will have vet bills throughout their lives. They may also make messes or need obedience training. If you or someone you know is not ready for this, PLEASE DO NOT GET THE PET. SO TRUE! God, this pisses me off to no end. People NEVER want to hear this but it's true, pets aren't play things you can toss aside when you get bored with them ( ... )

That is very heartbreaking.I hate seeing animals that should be going to a loving home euthanized because no one will adopt them.It must be hard working at a shelter having things like this happening on a daily basis.
