There was really no other way to look at it. Kai was hopelessly, devotedly infatuated with him. And Ruki? Ruki couldn't care less. Well, that's not entirely true. Ruki might not have returned Kai's feelings, his vivid affection, but he certainly took advantage of it.

Kai doted. He catered to his every whim. He was the epitome of a puppy on a string, the lovesick fool. Completely wrapped around his little finger, and every other cliche in the book.

"It's kind of sick, Taka, the way you lead him on like this." Reita chimed in from where he sat strumming his bass. They were in the middle of a rehearsal when Kai had just gone running to the nearest ramen shop, unable to to bear the sight of Ruki's quivering lip as he'd cried hunger.

"I don't know what you mean," he smirked, doodling in his lyric book instead of actually doing something productive, "All I said was I'm hungry. We haven't had a break all day."

"Like you didn't know he'd jump at the chance to be your knight." It was Uruha this time, breaking briefly away from his quiet conversation with Aoi and giving away that he'd be eavesdropping. "He's not going to chase you forever, you know. He might be naive, but he's not stupid."

"Am I not entitled to enjoy a little attention from someone? You guys act like I'm asking him for the moon. I don't actually ask him for ANYTHING." He grumbled. He liked the attention, he loved being treated like a princess. He did not like being criticized. And so he chose to ignore them, pulling out his iPod and stuffing the earbuds into his ears.

Unfortunately, as time went on it became clearer that Uruha's prediction was right. Kai really wasn't stupid enough to chase Ruki forever. It had be weeks since that day in the studio and while he had continued to get pleasing results from every implied request and pout, his pet drummer was beginning to show a little wear around the edges.

It started simply enough, Kai began showing up to rehearsals looking an interesting cross between solemn and lost, some days not appearing to have slept the night before. With every passing chore from the singer, his enthusiasm for pleasing him faltered a little bit more.

"Hey Taka," Reita leaned across the table towards him, propping himself on his elbows as soon as Kai had excused himself to the restroom. "Do you know what pets do when they've been kicked and neglected a few too many times by their owners?"

Ruki scowled, he knew where this was going and he really didn't feel like hearing it. He had noticed the changes in his friend himself and was, at least, remorseful but at a loss as to how to fix it.

Taking advantage of the silence he figured Ruki wasn't going to break, Reita continued anyways. "They snap. And sometimes, if it's bad enough, they bite."

No one was really prepared for the explosion when it came. That's not to say they weren't expecting it, but how does one protect themselves from an emotional shitstorm?

"Get it your fucking self."

Whoa. The look passed between everyone but the two in question, each wondering if they should leave or stay to guarantee the safety of the other two.

Kai went back to reviewing the tour schedule in his hands for a bit, while Ruki walked around the table. He picked up his pen which had rolled under Kai's chair. The object he'd asked, even politer than usual, for Kai to retrieve for him.

The singer sat back in his seat across from the drummer, looking like he'd just been slapped.

It didn't take particularly long for this to irritate Kai further, and he slammed the paper down on the table and walked out.

Kai's stress level seemed to go back to normal within the following weeks, though Ruki continued to walk around with his tail between his legs and tried to stay out of the man's way.

He didn't want to admit he missed Kai's affection. Worse, he didn't want to admit it was for less selfish reasons than anyone of his friends would give him credit for. After Kai's depression had started to show, Ruki had gotten it in his head that maybe giving Kai what he wanted for once wouldn't be so bad. That maybe something could come of it, even.

And despite the coldness Kai was trying to pass off as getting over Ruki, the occasional brief but longing glances didn't go unnoticed. Nor was the drummer oblivious to Ruki's increasingly frequent staring, often accompanied by the singers teeth worrying his lower lip in a nervous fashion.

"Is there something wrong with my face, or are you always staring at me for another reason?" He finally snapped, staring back at the other man as he waited for his answer.

Ruki decided not to reply right away, instead walking across the room to where the taller man stood. Reaching up and resting his hands on the sides of Kai's face, he pulled him down to his level.

"Another reason," he barely breathed before touching their lips together.

"Well this was unexpected." Uruha whispered into Reita's ear, the two looking in desperate need of popcorn.

"Yeah, but it's a little funny to watch the mouse chase the cat."

{AN: I have incredibly too much fun with the Warnings/Ratings thing.}
