This is my completely uneducated opinion about the protests etc of Thursday and Friday. I really know very very little about what the G20 was all about, so skip this if you feel like it, ha.
Anyway, I'm ALL for improving the environment, creating jobs, going green, healthcare for all, etc. I'm down with a lot of stuff that the "hippies" are going on about. Make the world a cleaner, healthier, happier place? I'm in. Duh.
But what I don't get is them protesting the G20. At least mostly. I understand the anarchists etc protesting it, sure. But not those people who still identify somewhere in the realm of democracy.
Being a democratic country means that, come election time, you vote for whoever you most trust to run the country. Maybe you didn't vote for Obama, but the majority of the country did. Okay, be pissed off, I understand that. But part of living in a democratic country means that you are expected to be supportive of your COUNTRY, and that means having faith in whatever decisions the people as a whole come to.
So what I don't understand is when people protest the G20 on the basis that it's "unrepresentative" etc. We vote on the ONE person that the country deems most trustworthy to represent the people and lead our country in the right direction. And then we protest because we don't like it when that one person is put in the situation to do exactly that?
Communists, socialists, anarchists, whateverists... do your thing. But to those who still identify within the realm of democracy... what the fuck? If you're for advocating healthcare plans, or creating more green jobs... that's AWESOME... but there are so many MORE EFFECTIVE ways of going about it, than setting up tents and holding signs during marches. Instead of putting so much energy into protesting, why not redirect it to programs that will ACTUALLY get the government to listen to you? And if you're not advocating for those sort of things... then why the hell are you protesting? It's completely hypocritical. So either realign your political standings to a less democratic stance, or shut up and quit your whinging over the fact that whoever you personally voted for, is not the man in the convention center. Stop being so immature.
And to ALL... whether you like it or not, the right to protest does NOT give you the right to destroy shit that isn't yours. If you don't like that, then move to a different country.
