Wait, didn't the vatican just soften its position on abortion? Particularly if it involved saving the mother's life? Or did someone just slip me some LSD and I hallucinated a more rational world...
I'm not sure (I think that archbishop might just be a jerk) but either way I feel excommunication is a bit strong. I can accept the argument that it's murder, but unless you've excommunicated all those who have committed murder, it seems to be rather unfair.
As far as I can figure from trying to check on the internet abortion is only legitimate to the Vatican if it is a result of treating uterine cancer or ectopic pregnancy, and I don't know what the doctors said this girl's problem was. Apparently "to save the life of the mother" is too broad a pass for the Catholic Church to allow.
