The first ominous crack jolted Utena from a rose scented dream, forgotten the moment she woke. Amid Minako's sleepy mumblings, she rolled over and buried her face in the pillow once more, just as a second, quieter but no less alarming sound came from outside the building

A small spark flew from Kalinka's fingers and inches away from Utena's face, though it would pass harmlessly by, so long as the Slayer didn't budge. It didn't seem that the currently blonde girl had noticed Utena enter at first, but she had just as easily ignored Utena's entrance entirely.
Calmly, Kalinka lowered her hand, taking a brief pause before responding. "A thunder storm," she said simply, beneath a cloudless sky. "Is our fair Prince afraid of lightning? I'm afraid that the roof is not a very good place to hide, nor is it a wise decision to strike it back with a metal sword, were you hoping to rush out and defeat it." Kalinka's words came very seriously, though anyone with their wits about them could have easily figured out her attempt at humor.
Utena's mouth quirked slightly as she let the spark fly past her face and into the cool night air. The blade remained in her hand, dangling with false casualness by her side. She glanced upwards, eyeing the cloudless night and then looking at Kalinka once more.
"I don't usually rush up to the roof with sword in hand when it storms," she replied, flashing a tight smile at the girl. "Actually, I kind of like storms."
Looking around, the feeling of forboding remained.
"But something doesn't seem right up here. Have you seen anything strange tonight?"
Pausing, she glanced over Kalinka once more, finally noticing her blond hair. "Tired of having green hair?"
"Well, you're acting rather strangely." Kalinka said with a small smile. "Other than that, only myself."
Crossing them over her chest, the more insecure girl tugged her green sleeves over twinging arms, pulling away slightly. Besides the other reasons, it truly was still a bit cold at night, especially after a hot shower and having electricity coursing through one's body. "Believe it or not, it's not the way I was born. I just wasn't sure how I would look this age without it."
Kalinka glanced down to her arms, thinking that either the pain was from overactivity, or perhaps because of a certain Witch having a bad dream and losing her temper. It wasn't long before she looked up again, away and towards the night. "Would you prefer another color, perhaps?"
Kalinka remained unturned, standing still as if she were a statue, only allowing her mouth to move. The sound alone was obvious enough for her. "Breaking things, breaking people... Anything too inconvenient to take care of properly. Destroy it or kill it. If it's an animal, shred it up and stuff it in your mouth

Rei tossed and turned restlessly in her sleep. She could feel a bad omen of things to come, but eventually talked herself back into lying down as she could not immediately sense anything amiss. But rest would not come as the Shinto priestess could not shake the bad feeling that she had deep within her

"No. No, no, no..." Kalinka crawled shakily towards the door, waiting for Utena to turn around, storming back with her sword at the ready. Instead, the footsteps simply continued further away as the doorway closed itself, and Kalinka's head hung down for a moment of silence. Her eyes saw nothing but concrete and her still half-pink hair, up until she leaned back into a crouch

In the dead of night, the demon's voice was easily heard over the stillness that had fallen over the rest of the campus. Following the source of the voice before she even made eye contact with it's owner, Rei's chin lowered, her eyes drew narrow, and an even more stern expression than usual appeared on her face
( ... )
Rei stood there for a moment before her hand slowly slipped back underneath her robe, tucking the warding scroll back where she had originally retrieved it from. Her stare never left the demon, though in the corner of her eye she watched Kalinka tremble. Kalinka's words said to go, but the words of a hostage could not be trusted. The demon may be trying to possess her, forcing it's words through her mouth. Or Kalinka may be cooperating with her attacker in the hopes that she would be released, as many hostages often do.
"Ignoring ME is even more foolish," Rei's angry reply broke the silence. "No, you know nothing of my kind. MARS POWER..." The hand that seemingly dropped it's weapon had instead retrieved a far more powerful one, grabbing her henshin pen and lifting it high into the air. "MAKE...UP

Utena's frantic run up the stairs halted abruptly when a wave of fire and heat seemed to roll against the broken door. She paused, looking through the gap between the door and the wall, mouth dropping open as her own best friend, Rei, was engulfed in flame. Utena prepared to launch herself forward, but she held herself back as she saw that the magic was not harming her friend, but transforming her into a powerful soldier.
Rei's pronouncement still echoed in her ears as she darted out from behind the door to stand next to her friend, brandishing the Sword of Dios, which gleamed in the moonlight.
"Impressive entrance, Mars," Utena said in a deceptively casual tone. "Mine isn't so impressive, but I won't stand for a demon hurting my friends."
Bringing the sword up again, she glanced over at her friend, again referring to her by her super identity, rather than her real name.
"Utena?!?" A brief glimpse of shock was visible on the raven-haired girl's stern face. Way to go, Rei. That makes three girls who now know your secret. Her mind raced as she continued to stare down the demon that stood before her. At least two of them can be trusted. The third one hardly talks anyway, and there wasn't anything you could do about her stealing your diary while you were halfway around the world...A smirk reappeared on the Sailor Soldier's lips, as she joked back with her friend in a similarly casual manner. Violet eyes cut sideways at the Prince ever so briefly. "At least your entrance doesn't leave you standing nude in front of everyone." The smile faded, a focused and determined look replacing it as Sailor Mars once again turned her attention to her opponent. Though deep down she was still Hino Rei, there was something very different about the crimson-clad girl Utena stood beside on the rooftop. It was as if a part of her had been unlocked, her true self coming to the surface to be seen for the first time

Utena held firm, letting none of the shock she felt at her friend's powerful attack show on her face. She watched as the flaming projectile barrelled towards the demon, holding her breath as she waited to see if it would hit.
Carefully avoiding the glowing red metal of the door Rei had just melted, Utena offered her arm to her friend to help her down the stairs since hers were the more severe injuries.
Glancing at her sailor-suited friend, she murmured "Think you should change back before we get to the hall?"

Sailor Mars closed her eyes as she sighed. "So you did see...", she quietly said moments before her uniform reverted back to bright red ribbons that unwrapped themselves from around her body, leaving Hino Rei standing there once more. Now clad in the simple bedclothes that she previously wore, she accepted Utena's steadying arm. "I was so focused on that demon, that I didn't even See you there. The evil aura was so strong that it pretty much blocked out everything else."
She glanced down at the wound, thankful at least that it was high enough above her knee that the bandages likely would be above the hemline of her school uniform's skirt, unlike that of her other uniform. "I'll be all right," she finally replied to the question Utena asked with her body language instead of her words. "How are you...were you injured?"

Quietly, she replied. "I saw. Don't worry."
Utena unzipped the lightweight hoodie she had put over the lycra camisole she had worn to bed, turning the sleeve inside out to dab at the scrape on her cheek. "It's nothing serious and I heal pretty quickly," she said calmly.
With quick, deft movements, she tied the soiled hoodie around her waist one-handed without removing her support from Rei, and then began easing her friend down the stairs.
