I am going to Barcelona for my holiday too. I've been once before and I love it. It's no worse for pickpockets than London.
I am looking for a hotel/hostel recommendation, as last time we stayed with the big kid's grandmother who is an EFL teacher there, so I shall read comments with interest. It is my perception that El Raval is a bit like the area round Gare du Nord, oe even Leith, and I like that. It's very central, right where La Rambla is.
You MUST go to Parc Güell. I can't wait to go to Xampany and Xocoa and also eat my body weight in baby octopus!
There will be noisy parts of Raval - bear in mind the Spanish will be out partying until 5 or 6am. Although Raval is OK to stay in and is central, I preferred El Eixample, just a few blocks north. Quieter, closer to shops on Diagonal yet still just 5 mins from the Ramblas etc
i agree that raval is not that bad but that el eixample is nicer for sleeping in. or universidad is very pretty and totally walking distance from everything (also there is a jgsaw puzzle shop there that has the most awesome puzzles ever, some of them have 50,000 pieces, no joke!). nobody tried to pickpocket us even once, but we still left most of our stuff in the hotel room whenever we left. one of us would carry cash and the other would carry one credit card and that was it. i kept my handbag with me but it was always emptied of anything important

Barcelona is home of the egg danger? I shall try to avoid although I do love spanish omlette. That noise i art sounds great, although I would have a hard time convincing Steven to go to a veggie restaurant in the land of chorizo.
don't worry noise i art is full of the carne, i had veal (on accident i couldn't remember the spanish words for different meats) and prawns there.
we think it was an omelotte and ham sandwhich on xmas day that gave me the salmonella, but it may have been a chicken stirfry the day before. either way, be careful of mayonaisse and runny eggs
