Looks like I'm back in Taekwondo again! Some of the instructors I got along with really well ended up opening their own school. I'm attending there now

I've never been much on sparring : To me it's volunteering to get hit. I'll pass. However... it sounds to me like you're just rusty. I know when I go back after time away (due to injury, or illness) I feel a bit stiff at first.
After 5 months though... hm. That seems a bit long. Did you just start sparring again, or have you been doing it the whole 5 months?
I've always loved sparring. I used to be pretty good too, never really aggressive, but at least pretty smart in means of combinations and knowing what to use against certain people.
I haven't been sparring as much as I'd like, there's only one sparring night a week and I can only get there on Tuesdays and Thursdays (so far). So I've made it to a few classes, but haven't been enough to really get back into the swing of things (in means of sparring). I'm sure the issue will resolve, but its getting a little frustrating.
Are you concentrating on trying to win the fight or what you can learn from the experience? Is it coming from fear of expectation? Maybe fear of getting hurt?
What does stiff mean to you? Are you having trouble finding the openings on attacks? you start to bind up into the fetal postition (hunching and drawing your arms close, shoulders up.) Unstable footwork?
DID you quit originally because of an injury? Are you physically stiff?
More concentrating on what I can learn from the experience at this point. I'm not afraid of getting hurt, despite having had some serious injuries from Taekwondo. Of those, it would probably be fear of expectation. Like I mentioned, I was never really 'aggressive' in my sparring, but I definitely wasn't passive. I was good. Now I feel like I suck

Hi, injuries aside, your body is different now from when you were training regularly. The body is constantly rewiring itself to match its current needs. There will be reactions you trained till you didn't have to think about them that will need to be retrained. On top of this, you will be out of practise witht he "rush" of aldrenaline and the timing and chaos and all sorts of crazy stuff that comes with sparring. This will take time and practise to come back, but it will. Its frustrating as hell, but think of it as growing these bits anew - perhaps as you regrow them you will see them from a different perspective and wind up even better than you were? Best of luck! Hope it all goes well
