We get that a lot at work, with complaints of people getting lost bushwalking or something silly like that. There's a huge search for people costing amazing amounts of money or time and when they're found there's a massive lot of public sympathy, when really they've just been idiots and gone without the necessary items. Annoys me no end! So I am feeling you there :)

We don't get many missing people related to mountain sports since it's the Alps and any finite amount of walking downhill will inevitably bring you towards civilization, so... The true heroes are people that go on ski tours on days of high avalanche risk. Gives exactly the same scenario as with your lost bushwalkers.

*nods* yeah we're not nearly as populated as it is over there and walking in any one direction is not really guaranteed to be safer than another, lol.
I don't even know why people do that! Why go out and risk danger? I have enough trouble some time navigating traffic to my local shopping centre, haha!
