I hear ya. My son is going to be five in June. My other son will be three on the 14th and he'll be in preschool this fall :( They're growing too fast!! It's so hard sending them to school. As happy as I am that they are at the school age and I'm proud of them they just seem so little! It's just so hard to send them off sometimes. He'll have a great time though. It's harder for us mothers than it is for the kids lol. It is really amazing to see such little children do in such a big place such as school. Not that I ever doubted my kids couldn't do awesome things, but I don't know..it's hard to explain. You walk in there on parent's night and you see all that they have done and you watch your child interacting with the other kids and it is really just so amazing :D

I have no children, but I've been one:) I am sure the answer to your 'how messy' question is "very". I used to fall over lots and tear the knees of my trousers (and my knees in general, still have the scars!). My school uniform involved a horrible maroon jumper too... Does he have to wear a tie?
