I just fell alllll the way down our wooden basement stairs. I think I'm ok. I hit my left butt cheek in the same exact place where I fell on the corner of a table the other day, so that really hurts. I also did something to my elbow - it's already bruised and it feels like a pinched nerve or something ( Read more... )

Books that I LOVE. I haven't read anything new for the last, say, 17 months... but ( ... )

Wow. I don't even know where to begin with that list, lol! Although I love young adult novels, I think I'd prefer to stick to adult stuff for now. You know - His Dark Materials are intended for young adults, though, and I felt like it was really graphic for young adults in some places. For example, when the bear king eats the other bear king's heart (I'm trying not to give away details here). Maybe I'm just overly sensitive to that stuff...

So out of all of these, which single book should I go to a library and get immediately?

I totally agree about HDM. When I bought my first copy of HDM, they were in the children's section. Totally not a children's book, though I guess a child can read it with a simplified understanding (talking bears! a mean mother! witches! a quest!). But, yeah, it is pretty graphic, and I doubt kids and teens would get a lot of the story. I mean, I had to reread the book a few times before I really understood a lot of it ( ... )

Ok, thanks! I think I'll go out and get one of those today or tomorrow.

Thanks for the sorry, although it was no one's fault but my own. I have these stupid slippers that are very slippery, I had a bunch of stuff in my hands, and I was rushing so I could go back up to the kitchen to help Terran down the stairs. Ugh, I'm regretting it now. My butt hurts sooo bad, and my hand keeps falling asleep because of this elbow. I also didn't think I hit my head, but I must have because I have a headache and my neck hurts, too. Dumb dumb dumb.

My all-time favorite book is "House of Leaves" by Mark Z. Danielewski. It's about a house that's bigger on the inside than the outside and kind of "eats" its inhabitants. In all sense of the word, it's a total mindfuck and pretty dark. But soooo good.

I also never finished, but really liked, The Fountainhead. I think I'm on the last 200 pages or so.

If you're looking for an escape from the crappy people of the world, I recommend the Anne of Green Gables series. It's generally pretty happy and temporarily restores my faith in mankind.

OMG, it was you. I knew it was someone on my friends list that recommended "House of Leaves" to me. I read it. Ohhhh yeah, I read it. What a crazy, fucked up, and scary book. That book scared the crap out of me. The effect may have been increased because I read it while pregnant, but I also read it riiiiiight before moving into our new house. I STILL get nervous that I'm going to walk into our bedroom and there's going to be an extra closet or something.
That book would be number 1 on my list of "Books that Scared the Living Daylights out of Me". :)

Don't get me wrong - a GOOD book. Just... scary.

Oh yeah, and as far as the Fountainhead - I've never read any Ayn Rand. I want to, but I'm sort of turned off by her because of two people that went to Lyco. Did you know Erin Mastrontonio and her boyfriend, Bob Benoit? They were both in my class, as well as most of my physics classes. I was really good friends with Bob freshman/sophomore year, and he was a great guy. Then he started dating Erin, and he gradually started hating me because of her. She also turned him into an objectivist, which is what she became, as soon as she read Ayn Rand. I don't agree with one of the tenants of objectivism - the sort of every man for his own happiness tenant. In my opinion, this world wouldn't function without reliance on other human beings, and for everyone to be in totally selfish pursuit leads to the eventual fall of humanity. Erin was a complete nut about this stuff, and she wasn't a very nice person either. So, I'm hesitant to read the works of an author who is capable of turning rational people into objectivists. Perhaps I'm totally off on ( ... )

Wow, I don't remember them, but that sounds pretty kooky! Haha. I don't agree with objectivism completely, but I can see why someone would - it gives you an excuse to only care about yourself, your values, and what you want. It's an attractive theory. Nuttiness aside, it's a pretty decent book. Kind of graphic in parts. But it's interesting, especially if you're into architecture. I liked it because the main character refuses to succumb to the artistic ideals of everyone else, which is something I've always struggled with in graphic design. The book might not have turned her crazy - she might have already been crazy and the book gave her a word to use for it :) Haha ( ... )

Ow! I fell just a few steps, I can't imagine all of them, wood even. I hope you are ok!

Books - I just listed the ones I want to read this year. But some of my favorite are:

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn - read it 4 times I think. I just really enjoy this book and will probably find it to read again soon! I don't know what happened to my copy.
Angels and Demons - Dan Brown. I liked DaVinci Code too, but this one was better I think.
Flowers for Algernon
Sybil (I'm a psych minor, I love this book - even if the validity was questioned.)
Running With Scissors - Augusten Burroughs
The Alienist- Caleb Carr. It's been so long since I read it but it's about a serial killer at time Teddy Roosevelt was around in NYC (governor, police chief?) and the beginnings of forensic science. I just really liked it.

Drawing blanks... I guess I need to read more! I read some authors that in general I like their books, but don't have a favorite book. I need to expand my reading though, go outside the box a little I think!

Thanks for the recommendations! I've read Angels and Demons, I thought it was pretty good. Out of all of these on this list, which one would you recommend that I go out and get this week?

So, if you had to pick just one of these for me to get at the library today, which would it be?
