there are so many lovely quotes and song lyrics that i read, and think to myself, oh i should bookmark this! yet i never do and they all get lost to me. so from now on i'll be posting them all here. ❤
the novel it's from is a sort of coming of age story, and the line is from a part where the main character contemplates his relationship to a female friend, and also how they're dealing with a friend's suicide some years earlier. the full paragraph reads: halfway through april naoko turned 20. she was seven months older than i was, my own birthday being in early november. there was something strange about her becoming 20. i felt as if the only thing that made sense, wether for naoko or for me, was to keep going back and forth between 18 and 19. after 18 would come 19, and after 19, 18, of course. but she turned 20. and in the autumn, i would do the same. only the dead stay 17 for ever. the friend killed himself when he was seventeen.
Oh god, two friends of mine died at a very young age this year, so "only the dead remain seventeen forever" really resonated with me. If you were curious, the original is 「死者だけがいつまでも十七歳だった。」 I'll seriously never forget it.
