I like to imagine that I have pretty decent taste in movies, and I've enjoyed all manner of vampire movies in the past, so why does it seem like I'm the only person in the world who wasn't blown away by "Let the Right One In"? What am I missing here?

I can't remember if we talked about this. I remember reading the commercial dvd release had a very different translation of the subtitles:

That could be one thing. Other wise, I didn't think it was a groundbreaking film or anything like that. I thought it was a pleasantly unique take on the whole vampire thing, and visually it was quite beautifully. Quite Tarkovskian.

But I suppose little compares to the Hunger :).

you probably heard so much about how AY-MAYYY-ZING it was that your expectations were pretty high before you saw it. i think the thing about the film was that it was a nice little surprise. you walk in going "swedish vampires, hooray!" and you walk out going, "well that was an unexpectedly charming love story."

p.s. i have had many perfectly decent movies ruined for me by seeing them later on and having high expectations and leaving the movie disappointed saying, "well, jeez, i didn't come in my socks or anything." so if i am wrong, it is because i am projecting.

No, I've definitely had movies ruined by hearing too often how great they are. I think that was part of the problem here or sure. Perhaps that combined with the translation thing.
