Forget Proust and go for the great French writer Alain Robbe Grillet. Proust was one of those forunners of the Modernist moventment in literature, which really sucked almost as bad as the Victorian novel that it took over throughout the western world.

Wow, I acutally suggested a writer that you haven't read. Western civilization may collaspe soon.

I would suggest >i>Two Novels: Jealousy and in the Labyrinth (In the Labyrinth) (that is the whole title) as a first book. There is a cool essay in that book too about Grillet's theory of literature that is pretty cool.
