Yes, I placed a cat in there (a stray) and it simply disappeared, it is quite definitely a vanishing cabinet. I believe it to have been made sometime in the 18th century, due to the design and engravings.
I believe that finding it would be best, in order to establish some sort of knowledge on where a person would end up if pushed inside. It would hardly do to try get rid of a person and have them show up in a Ministry storeroom.

Have you tried using a summoning charm for the cat from our side of the cabinet? Just to make sure it's still alive.
I think, perhaps, the best way to figure out where the cabinet leaves is to have someone go in and then come back to tell us. Do you think this is the right moment to hire a new clerk?
