Suggestions Needed

I posted the phoenix and auryn tattoo's a couple weeks ago. Well, I'm looking down the barrell of another couple hours of work and honestly I am uncertain as to how to finish the phoenix. Eventually she will be part of an elemental sleeve [I'm going to have fire and water on that arm and earth and air on the other] and I want it to have 'the sleeve

I see why you're having trouble with the background, its such a bold tattoo. I think just lighter whispy "swirlies" in like a deep blue or purple might help to connect the sleeve with future peices.

Perhaps have the black fade into a deep purple that turns into a swirling mist type thing... allowing it to branch into other pieces - perhaps having them turn into dark blue oceanic waves with stars that become like the spray off the waves? (hopefully that comes across right) ... what else are you thinking to add to the sleeve?
