This is an amazing and terrible event that you're experiencing but it sounds like you do have the right attitude to it. If nothing else, it's going to be a fascinating topic of conversation for years to come. (There's a bright side to everything, right?)

I have a lot of respect for Japan's architectural skill right now. Despite what you see on the news, the damage could (should even) have been much, much worse considering the size of the quake.
The headlines are, 'over 10,000 killed by natural disaster', or somesuch. The headlines that we DON'T see are, 'over 100,000 saved by architects'. It's a very valid point.
